Description

A study of the life (1898-1936) and work of Spanish artist and author Federico Garcia Lorca. Readings and assignments will provide the opprotunity for the student to consider Lorca and his work (poems, plays, drawings, lectures, allocutions, interviews, and letters) in the social, artistic, political and historical context of Spain in his lifetime as well as the roots and present day reality of some of the themes and realities that inspired and informed his production. These include turn of the century science, art, literature and politics, Spain's Two Republics, the Golden Age, Gypsy culture, Flamenco music, Women, Nature, the Bullfight, and more. Students will practice the analysis of literary texts, investigate thoroughly one of the many possible themes, produce a portfolio of research and an annotate bibliography on that theme.
