Description

This course prepares middle level educators to plan standards-aligned social studies instruction. Students will become familiar with the specific characteristics of middle level learners. The course focuses on social studies teaching at the curricular and instructional levels. Students will learn research-based instructional techniques that support middle level learners in developing disciplinary literacy practices while learning content. Emphasis will be placed on differentiating instruction and assessments to meet the various language and literacy needs of middle level learners, including the use of technology as applied to social studies teaching in the middle school. All lesson plans will be linked to PA Academic Standards for Civics and Government and History as well as PA Core Academic Standards for Reading and Writing in History and Social Studies. Prerequisite: Formal Admission to the Education Department.
