Description

This course addresses the needs of middle level Mathematics Educations (grades 4-8) as guided by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and PA Core Academic Standards for Mathematics. Course topics include an examination of educational trends and the impact of technology in mathematics instruction. The course focuses on the mathematical content taught in grades 4 through 8 and includes an analysis of teaching methodologies and strategies as well as assessment techniques, communication in mathematics, and relating math to the real world through using a variety of math skills and tools to solve problems. Students will explore how to teach key mathematical concepts and will evaluate textbooks and teaching materials. Utilizing an inquiry-based, child-centered focus, students will actively apply a wide variety of manipulative materials and representations to the teaching of mathematics in diverse classrooms.
