Description

This course addresses research-based methods for designing and implementing effective literacy instruction and assessment across disciplinary areas for students in grade 4 through 8. Students will develop an understanding of the disciplinary literacy practices inherent in reading and writing in middle level genres, including narrative, informative/explanatory, and opinion/argumentative. Emphasis will be placed on comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and making connections among ideas and between texts with a focus on textual evidence for both informational and literature texts. Students will apply knowledge of effective instructional techniques that foster academic language development and content learning through the development of lesson plans that would support diverse middle level learners in reaching the PA Core Academic Standards for ELA in grades 4 ? 8 and enable middle level learners to successfully navigate the language demands of reading and writing in history, mathemati
