Description

In this course, students will increase their knowledge about individuals with serious mental illness (SMI), including defining, assessing, and treating SMI in an ethical and culturally-informed manner. Students will learn how to apply already-developed knowledge of psychotherapy interventions to work with this population and will learn additional individual, family, and community-based approaches to treatment. There will be a specific emphasis in understanding family systems and SMI, as well as family involvement in treatment. This course will emphasize the recovery model in mental healthcare and teach specific evidence-based practices consistent with this model, as well as expose students to services available for support, employment, and housing that are commonly implemented in collaborative interdisciplinary treatment settings.
