Description

This course is an overview of the application of mindfulness practice to psychology and counseling. The course begins with the history of spiritual and wisdom-based traditions of meditation and contemplative practice. Research on the relationship of mindfulness to well-being and brain functioning is reviewed. The application of mindfulness to current treatment ap-proaches in counseling, including specific challenges such as depression, anxiety, co-occurring disorders and trauma, is pre-sented. Given the importance of a subjective understanding of the foundations of mindfulness, experiential practice in mindfulness techniques is a core aspect of the course. (New course Fall 2015.)
