Description

This course will provide a survey of the history of children?s literature and will equip reading specialist candidates with a criti-cal literacy perspective to using children?s literature from infancy through high school. Various genre will be explored includ-ing: folklore and oral tradition, rhymes and poetry, picture books, transitional chapter books, graphic novels, young adult fiction, folktales, fairy tales, fantasy, and science fiction. Special emphasis will be placed on using non-fiction texts, as well as books that celebrate diversity and encourage an inclusive classroom environment that fosters social justice. This course is required for reading specialist certification.
