Description

This course presents future teachers (grades 4-8) with the study of child development from age eight to adolescence. It is designed for the students to learn about all aspects of young adolescent development: physical, emotional, social, cultural, and cognitive. The course aims to introduce a holistic view of human development as integrated into particular social and cultural contexts by presenting contemporary theories of development of the middle level child and research methods in the study of young adolescent development. In particular, aspects of healthy psychological development for young adolescents that are relevant in teaching and learning will be examined. Stage I field experiences are integrated into this course. Reflections and assignments are linked to PDE field competencies and are demonstrated via initial portfolio development. Students must have current PA clearances on the first day of class. Core: Social Sciences requirement.
